Vivek Pandey awarded his first research grant

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Vivek Pandey has been awarded his first research grant from the esteemed Saha Foundation Fund for the Study of Food and Cardiovascular Health. Nirmal Verma to present at the International Stroke Conference 2025

Dr. Nirmal Verma, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in Dr. Florin Despa's lab will present in Los Angeles, California at the International Stroke Conference (ISC) 2025. The American Heart Association's ISC is the largest conference of its kind, focusing on cerebrovascular disease and brain health. Dr. Verma's presentation will focus on the potential role of diabetes-associated hyperamylinemia in stroke.

Noah Leibold to present at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Mr. Noah Leibold's abstract was accepted to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's conference, "Neurodegenerative Diseases: Biology & Therapeutics" which will take place at the Cold Spring Harbor campus near New York City, New York. Noah will present his work on the interaction between two important proteins in Alzheimer's pathophysiology, apoE and amylin.

Despa Lab presents at AAIC 2024!

Dr. Florin Despa's lab was well represented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this month. Mr. Noah Leibold, Dr. Deepak Kotiya, and Dr. Ravichandra Davargaon all presented their work as posters.

Vivek Pandey presents at BCVS 2024, receives New Investigator Travel Award

Vivek Pandey was Honored to receive the New Investigator Travel Award for his work on diabetic cardiomyopathy at the American Heart Association's Basic Cardiovascular Sciences (BCVS)-2024 meeting.He was also invited to ACS-Society for South Asian Heart Research (SAHR; a pre-BCVS meeting) for an oral presentation of his research work. He secured third place in the category of postdoctoral/faculty oral presentations at the SAHR meeting.

Florin Despa named a Top Scholar by ScholarGPS!

Dr. Florin Despa has been recognized by ScholarGPS as a Top Scholar for his outstanding performance in the fields of dementia and diabetes research, based on his "strong publication record, the impact of [his] work, and the notable quality of [his] scholarly contributions," according to ScholarGPS. Noah Leibold re-elected to NSPS Board

Noah Leibold, PhD student in Dr. Florin Despa's lab has been re-elected to the Executive Board of the Nutritional Sciences and Pharmacology Students organization in the Department! Last year, Noah served as Vice President of the student-focused organization. This year, he will serve as the Managing Editor for the Journal of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences.   Congratulations on your re-election, Noah!

Nirmal Verma Awarded AHA Career Development Award

Dr. Verma, an assistant professor in our lab, received the AHA Career Development Award (CDA) focused on the role of diabetes-associated hyperamylinemia in stroke. The AHA Career Development Award supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals in the early years of their first professional appointment to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist in the field of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease research. Deepak Kotiya awarded prestigious Alzheimer's Association Research Fellowship

Dr. Deepak Kotiya, PhD, was awarded the Alzheimer's Association's prestigious Research Fellowship grant (AARF) for "exceptional researchers" before their first independent faculty position.  Dr. Kotiya's project, "Effect of passive amylin immunotherapy on amylin and Aβ plaque burden in AD," was approved for nearly $140,000 in funding over 2 years by the Alzheimer's Association! Noah Leibold presents at AD/PD 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal

On March 6, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal, Noah Leibold presented his research to the AD/PD 2024 conference. His talk was entitled "ApoE4 promotes accumulation of amyloid-forming pancreatic amylin in brain parenchyma through a blood-brain barrier mediated mechanism." The presentation is available on the conference's virtual platform for registered participants to view.
